Course Content & Modules

Before the course starts, a range of information will be available for you to access and complete online in your own time and send back to us before the deadlines.  You can still enrol on the course (providing there are spaces) after this information has been released up to the final cut-off date.

Equipment

You do not have to have a lot of equipment to join this course.  Videos will explain more about the ‘Sonic Colours Kit’ that comprises instruments that will enable you to paint your beautiful sonic landscapes with. A typical kit contains a range of shakers, chimes, a drum or two and some singing bowls and tonal instruments.  Guidance will be given to help you to choose the instruments that suit your needs and budget.

  • Have the instruments shipped to your home
  • Playing technique tutorials will get you started and practising at home before and after the virtual classroom

Foundation Module

  • An online course to take at your leisure before the deadline.
  • The key concepts and research underpinning the BAST Method will be introduced
  • Quizzes and interactive exercises help you check your understanding and deepen your knowledge

Virtual Classroom 1 – Theoretical Underpinnings and Interactive Work

19th, 20th, 21st & 22nd March 2024 9.30am – 2pm

Many people lead busy lives and time can be short. At BAST we have spent many years refining our training courses to save you valuable time and money but without compromising your learning experience. In fact, we believe that our courses are now the best that they’ve ever been!

The virtual classrooms are a wonderful rich learning environment where we take a deep dive into therapeutic sound.  You will need to be able to activate your video and audio for these classrooms.  A pair of headphones will also be needed.

  • Unpack the BAST Method in more depth in the comfort of your home
  • The key concepts and research underpinning the BAST Method of Sound and Voice Arts Therapy will be introduced including current research in neuro-science, sound and music psychology and medical ethnomusicology
  • Take part in experiential exercises and small group sessions
  • Experience therapeutic sound sessions to understand how different sounds affect mind, body and emotions in different ways

Coursework & Home Study

The coursework period is where your work really comes to life!  Immerse yourself in the exercises taught and discover how the different techniques affect your own health and wellbeing. Use the reflective method to go deeper into your personal healing journey.  Check-in tutorial sessions with your tutor will enable you to get extra support and further inspiration.

  • Your bespoke learning pathway will be created for you
  • Take a deep dive with your instruments, learning different playing techniques and how to move mind, body and emotions with different sounds
  • Experiment with BAST method of Sound and Voice Arts Therapy at a deeper level through ‘self-treat’ exercises
  • The reflective process deepens with the aim of facilitating a rich and potentially enlightening personal process
  • Articles, quizzes, coursework exercises and training videos support you through your journey
  • Coursework is estimated to take approximately 3 hours a week on average and will last 4 months

This is where the work comes to life!  Join us for this interactive classroom where will put everything that we have learned together. Create a graphic score and take part in different therapeutic sound and voicescapes together. Participate in a range of different group sessions and create a ‘tone poem’ – beautiful non-sensical songs that bring people together. This and so much more will be explored during this weekend.

It is our aim that at the end of the class you will have a clear idea how to give a range of different treatments and techniques and be ready to go to the next stage of the course.

  • Get support from the tutor team
  • Gain confidence and experience of the layout and application of instruments in participative sessions
  • Receive new knowledge of different techniques

Virtual Classroom 4 – Hypothetical Case Study Sessions

5th & 6th September 9.30am – 2pm

During this interactive VC we will focus on putting different hypothetical case study sessions together.  We will cover advanced techniques and deeper reflection as we explore different approaches.  It is our aim that by the end of this virtual classroom you will have a greater understanding of how, when and why to hold different sessions.  We also will help you to focus your vision for the future and give you confidence to start your case studies.

  • Advanced techniques are covered in this module
  • Learn how to hold a safe and potentially deep healing space for your groups
  • Hypothetical case studies will be discussed in small peer groups

  • Information on how to find clients and inspiration for growing your business will be discussed

Will I need Instruments?

You will require instruments for the Sound Therapy courses. We will help you choose and order these. Instruments are not included in the course prices.

How much do I need to invest in my instruments?

This depends on which course you take. We can help you to choose the right equipment to suit your needs, and your budget. Investing in your professional sound therapy equipment is an important step in becoming a sound therapist. We will discuss this with you in full when you interview with us.

Do I need to be a musician or be able to play a musical instrument?

No, you don’t need to be a musician or already play an instrument. We will support you in learning playing techniques, specific to the instruments that you choose. We help you to develop an ear for pitch, rhythm and volume and to understand how sound affects mind, body and emotions.

Which course should I choose if I want to give gongbaths to groups?

If you would like to learn to give Gongbaths to groups only, then you should choose the Group Sound Relaxation Therapy course. If you want to provide a wider range of treatments to Groups then choose the Group Sound Therapy Training.
